I am a third-generation Rock Island County resident who has lived in the county for my entire life. I graduated from Alleman High School in 1992. I attended Black Hawk College where I played two years of Junior College Baseball for the Braves. I earned an associate’s degree from Black Hawk College in 1994. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History/Education from Western Illinois University in 1997. I met my wife Michelle in 1997 and we were married on July 14th 2001. I have two amazing daughter’s, Madison and Marley. Madison recently graduated from UTHS with the class of 2025. Marley will be a 7thgrader at Seton Catholic School in Moline. Family is so important to me and I am blessed to have their love and support.
I have been serving the citizens of Rock Island County for the last 28 years, with the last 20 years being with the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff. I have been in a supervisory role within the Office for over 13 of those 20 years. I started my service to the community as a youth supervisor at Arrowhead Ranch and advanced to the position of Group Therapist, where I conducted individual and family counseling for juvenile delinquents with a variety of problematic behaviors. I dedicated over 8 years of service to the youths at Arrowhead Ranch. Although I loved the staff and working at Arrowhead Ranch, I had always had a strong desire to pursue a career in law enforcement. I tested with Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office and was fortunate enough to be hired as a Deputy Sheriff by former sheriff, Mike Grchan, in June of 2005.
As a patrol Deputy, I worked on all three patrol shifts and immersed myself in all phases of policing and community involvement. In 2007, I was selected as a member of the Rock Island County Emergency Service Team (SWAT), a position I still hold today as the EST Tactical Commander for the last 10 years.
As a patrol officer, I completed the Field Training Officer Course (FTO). The responsibility of this position is to train new Deputy Sheriffs.
After serving 5 years as a patrol Deputy, I was selected for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Federal Gang Task Force as a Special Federal Officer. I had the opportunity to work large-scale drug and gang conspiracy cases while assigned to this position. This enabled me to enhance my interview and investigative skills while networking with a variety of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. While assigned to the FBI Gang Task Force, I was selected to be a member of the Regional ILEAS Weapons of Mass Destruction Special Response Team (WMDSRT), a team that I am currently a part of and have been a member of for 15 years. I have served as a Team Leader and Assistant Commander for the ILEAS WMDSRT Region 2 and Region 6/7.
In 2012, I was promoted to the rank of Sergeant while assigned to the FBI Gang Task Force and returned to a patrol assignment. I served as a patrol Sergeant for all three patrol shifts and became more involved in the development and implementation of departmental training at the Sheriff’s Office.
In 2014, I was assigned as the Supervisor of the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Unit (ACE). ACE was a narcotics and crime suppression unit where I sharpened my investigative skills and had the opportunity to work with multiple agencies on a variety of criminal investigations, including narcotics, felony, and homicide cases.
In 2016, I was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to second shift patrol. I served as a Lieutenant on all three patrol shifts.
In 2018, I was selected as part of the first statewide group to be trained and certified as an Illinois Active Threat Master Instructor. This allowed me to travel to various law enforcement agencies, private businesses, schools, college campuses, and churches to teach active threat response training. I am proud to be active in sharing and working with local instructors to provide current best practice active shooter response and rescue task force training to all of our local Quad City Metro agencies and fire departments. I work as a Lead Instructor for the MTTU IV police training center, instructing the QC Metro Basic SWAT Course, ITOA Active Threat Courses, Rescue Task Force, Use of Force, and several others.
In 2022, I was appointed and assigned to the Rock Island County Emergency Management Agency as the EMA Coordinator. In this role, I was responsible for developing disaster preparedness plans, writing grants, and engaging in numerous community programs and committees. While serving as EMA Coordinator, I was also the Sheriff’s Office training coordinator.
In 2023, I joined the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards and Training Bureau to implement new policy and procedure manuals for all departments. I reviewed, customized, and implemented updated office policies and procedures recognized as national law enforcement best practices. This role gave me an opportunity to work closely with our current Sheriff and administrative team, allowing me to view situations from both law enforcement and administrative perspectives. I am responsible for handling the Sheriff’s Office foreclosure sales and continue to serve as the agency’s training coordinator. I conduct Active Shooter Response Training twice a year and serve as a primary instructor for annual multi-jurisdictional training. With the introduction of the Pre-trial Fairness Act, I ensure the Office and all Deputies remain compliant with all state-mandated training, obtaining certification for necessary training through the Illinois State Training and Standards Board (ILTSB).
The reason I highlight my career accomplishments and current responsibilities is to demonstrate that I am the most qualified candidate to be the next Sheriff of Rock Island County.
As your Rock Island County Sheriff, I pledge to:
I appreciate your support and look forward to improving the safety and security of all Rock Island County residents as your next Sheriff.
